Rare Disease Report

RDR's #icebucketchallenge

AUGUST 23, 2014

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells, especially motor neurons.  As the motor neurons die, the ability to initiate and control muscle movement is lost.  And as the disease progresses, patients eventually become totally paralyzed.

The ALS  Ice Bucket Challenge is designed to raise awareness of ALS and the need for more research to develop better treatments and a cure.

People are strongly urged to:
1) do your own #icebucketchallenge
2) donate to the ALS Association
3) challenge others to do the same.
