Macy's and Make-A-Wish Partner for 10th Annual Believe Campaign

Mathew Shanley

The holiday season can be a burden for some, and organizations requesting donations can add to the load felt by those who are financially strapped.

For that reason, 2017 will be the 10th consecutive year in which the partnership between the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Macy’s have decided not to plead for funds – They’re just asking that people believe.

Make-A-Wish and Macy’s have teamed up again for their yearly Believe campaign, a letter-writing program that is designed to spark imaginations, spread holiday spirit and inspire generosity and goodwill in both children and adults, alike. The push encourages “Believers” to mail a letter to Santa Claus via a postage box that can be found at any local Macy’s stores (and online at macys.com/believe). For every letter sent, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish up to $1 million, with all proceeds assisting in the granting of wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.

On Friday, the event was officially started, with four local “Wish Kids” being hosted at the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place in Monroe, New Jersey. They were met by holiday treats from the notable Carlo’s Bakery, caroling by The Village Carolers of Medford, and nearly 20 local police officers. The group was transported by limousine and escorted via motorcade to the Freehold Raceway Mall where a press conference was held for the children to announce that their wishes had been granted.

Wish Kids Nico (6), Madison (10), Sidney (14), and Madison (15) officially initiated the holiday season by mailing their letters to the North Pole.

“The weather outside is not yet frightful,” said Make-A-Wish New Jersey CEO Tom Weatherall on the 65-degree November day, “but that must be because the temperature reflects the warmth that’s inside this Macy’s. Either way, we know that the holidays are here because the Believe campaign is here.”

In the decade that the campaign has existed, Macy’s has donated more than $15 million to Make-A-Wish.

“We couldn’t imagine the overwhelming response the Believe campaign would inspire when we introduced it 10 years ago,” said Holly Thomas, Group Vice President of Cause Marketing for Macy’s. “We have collected millions of letters throughout the years – each one representing an individual who was moved by the message of hope, love and generosity. The result has been the creation of a holiday tradition for families across the country, and ultimately, wish fulfillments that deliver joy and hope to the most amazing children. Macy’s is incredibly proud to play a part in that magic.”

Those wishing to participate in the Believe campaign can mail a letter to Santa Claus at any local Macy’s between now and December 24.
