Yesterday, Major League Baseball (MLB) launched the MLB Fights ALS
campaign, an effort to express its continued support of The ALS Association’s ALS Home Health Initiative
The league-wide fundraising effort will take place from August 1-5, and will be promoted in ballparks and by all of MLB’s media assets, including MLB.com, individual team websites, the MLB Network, and YouCaring.com, a leader in free online fundraising.
Those within the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” community are a frequent benefactor of the generosity of the MLB. In May, the Greater Philadelphia chapter of The ALS Association helped to host the #StrikeOutALS: Phillies Phestival
, an annual autograph and auction party designed to raise both money and awareness of the devastating, progressive neuromuscular disorder.
ALS patients typically experience muscle weakness or stiffness in the condition’s early stages, but, as the disease progresses, patients have been known to lose the abilities move, speak, swallow, and breathe independently.
The MLB will initiate the fundraiser with a $50,000 donation, and the effort will seek the generation of additional funds from fans and sponsors to assist in the Home Health Initiative’s mission of providing in-home care to individuals and families affected by ALS.

yesterday. “We thank Commissioner Manfred and the 30 clubs around the league for their generous gift and their commitment to helping us provide greater care to people living with ALS. The league and the clubs have long been important partners to our own chapters around the country and together, we are all working to strikeout ALS.”
“Because of Lou Gehrig, Baseball has long had a connection to the fight against ALS. In his memory, we are proud to assist ALS patients and families in carrying the enormous financial burden of living with the disease that bears his name,” Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said in the MLB’s press release

Fans can support the effort by visiting MLB.com/ForPetesSake. Donors who contribute $50 or more to the cause between August 1-5 will be automatically entered into a raffle to win 2 tickets to a 2017 World Series game.
